Black Tar was an experimental short film exploring the blends of traditional stop motion animation, live action film, and immersive spatial augmented reality to create a new method of filmmaking.
The methodology included animating the stop motion sequences and projection mapping them into the real world location. The animation was then given the illusion of 'breaking away' from the screen and interacting with the camera as an additional character within the narrative.
The exploration was an enquiry into alternative ways to 'play' with media methods to enhance illusionary sleight of hand and engaging immersive techniques.
The film premiered in VUE Cinema in 2018 and was distributed via the film festival circuit.
